.400 Legend And The New DURAMAG Magazines: Efficiency At Its Finest
Nowadays, it seems like no matter where you look, a new caliber is coming around, claiming to be the next best thing. But then they fall short—just not as good as they claimed to be.
But .400 Legend is different. Winchester promises:
“The energy of .450 Bushmaster with 20% less recoil, 100% more energy than a 12 gauge slug at 100 yards, more than 20% extra energy over 30-30 WIN, 25% more energy than .350 Legend, and 55% less recoil than a 12 gauge slug”
Doesn’t sound too bad, right? The .400 Legend is a beast of a round and is legal for hunting uses in many states. But with all that glory, you’ll need a high-quality magazine to hold your rounds. And DURAMAG just came out with a .400 Legend magazine that seems extremely promising.

.400 Legend DURAMAG SS
.400 Legend was released at SHOT Show 2023, which makes it almost a brand-new round, all things considered.
DURAMAG stepped up to serve consumers with a new iteration of its SS (stainless steel) magazines, which the company has given us in a multitude of calibers. Since .400 Legend is so new to the market, many factors have to be taken into account before creating the product and sending it out.
You know, like, making sure it’ll feed reliably? That’s a start.
The .400 Legend’s straight-walled casing can cause problems with some steel magazines, but DURAMAG set out to ensure that this wasn’t an issue and spent a lot of time getting the geometry right. Then with the Advanced Geometry Follower and EverFlex anti-fatigue spring that DURAMAG is known for, the magazine is setup to run exceptionally well.
I’m lucky enough to be friends with the owner of my local FFL, who has a huge collection, including some .400 Legend builds. During one of our most recent range outings, he was running these DURAMAG SS 400 Legend magazines in both the five-round and ten-round configurations.

What’s Next?
Since there are currently only five and ten-round options, it’s my hope that we’ll see some 20-round magazines soon. Sure, you may not need that many rounds since .400 Legend is more of a hunting round, but I’m sure we’re going to see a lot of AR-10 builds in .400 Legend.
We already see it growing in popularity, so it would make sense for DURAMAG to offer more AR-style magazines with a higher capacity.
So far, so good. I just can’t wait to see higher-capacity options.

Where’s The Competition?
So far, DURAMAG seems to be the only company releasing magazines for .400 Legend. This leaves the competition wide open, which is good for everyone.
For now, DURAMAG will get all the new business for shooters building an AR chambered in .400 Legend, and other companies can throw their offerings into the ring. I’m sure there are already some companies out there that are working on developing their own as I write this.
They can start by giving us 15 and 20-round magazines like we usually see with larger caliber AR-style rifles. The larger mags may be too heavy to carry around over long distances, but they would be great for a designated marksman rifle setup.
Conclusion
All in all, I like the new DURAMAG magazines, just like all of the others it offers. After seeing them in action, it’s clear that DURAMAG knows what it’s doing, so I’m excited.
Who knows, maybe DURAMAG will see this article and start manufacturing those higher-capacity mags, giving us more for the hogs.
If you’re looking for .400 Legend magazines, these DURAMAG SS magazines will easily get the job done. With all of the considerations that were taken and implemented into these magazines, a magazine-induced failure is the least of my concerns.
And honestly, you don’t really have any other options “yet,” so if you’re looking for .400 Legend magazines, DURAMAG is the way to go!
