I often see a lot of people catch heat online when asking for “budget” pistol recommendations. The argument is why would you ever bet your life on a pistol that costs less than, say your car payment?

To be honest, I agree to an extent. I would never intentionally go as cheap as possible on a tool that could save my life. However, that doesn’t mean you must spend thousands of dollars on a Staccato. Everyone has different budgets, and having an affordable but reliable pistol is better than no pistol!

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield Plus with the Streamlight TLR-6 attached

The Shield Plus makes a fantastic carry gun.

The key takeaway from this article is that affordable doesn’t have to mean unreliable. Affordable is different than “cheap”. Despite rising prices throughout the industry, we can still find quite a few reliable pistols under the $450 mark.

Each gun in this article can be found for under $450 brand new. For those on a budget who can only afford one pistol, we’ll stick with 9mm models that can be used for everything from home defense to the range to concealed carry.

FYI: These will be in alphabetical order, not by preference or quality.

Beretta APX A1

Beretta is the world’s oldest firearms manufacturer, so it’s safe to say they know what they are doing at this point! The APX A1 delivers just about everything you could want in a budget pistol, plus a little more.

Quality defensive ammo and the APX1 are a hard-to-beat combination. Source

Between the optics-ready slide, crisp trigger, and accessory rail, most boxes are checked right away. Then, once you add in the aggressive serrations, ergonomic grip, and modularity, you can see why it made this list.

Depending on the frame size you go with, it’ll come standard with an 8, 15, or 17-round magazine, so you can carry with confidence. It won’t have the level of aftermarket support you’ll find with Smith & Wesson or Glock, but not many others do!

Canik TP9 Elite SC

Canik doesn’t get the love it deserves, and this particular pistol is a perfect example of why it should.

The TP9 Elite SC was designed for superior performance, not just to hit a certain price point. It features an optics-ready slide, a match-grade barrel, and a premium trigger with an undercut trigger guard.

Even the small details received attention, such as an ambidextrous slide stop and a Tungsten Cerakote over the slide. These features kick the ergonomics and durability up a notch.

Most surprisingly, the pistol comes not only with a 12 and 15-round magazine but also a concealed carry holster! That’s one less thing you have to worry about buying.

CZ P-10 C

No beauty pageants are going to be won with the CZ P-10 C, but that’s fine because it makes up for it on the range.

With ergonomics and performance at the forefront of its design, you’ll find an enhanced grip angle, mild palm swell, beavertail, and interchangeable backstraps that help create a custom feel in hand. Driving the performance is a 4-4.5 pound trigger that is very repeatable to help keep follow-up shots on target.

Like a Glock, the CZ P-10 focuses on performance and not looks. Source

While it doesn’t come optics-ready, it does have metal 3-dot sights that get the job done just fine. You’ll also get an accessory rail to mount your favorite light and a standard 15-round capacity

It’s large enough to dominate at the range, yet compact enough to carry discreetly. It’s definitely worth checking out for yourself.

Ruger RXM

One of the most notable releases of 2024 was the Ruger RXM, a collaboration between Ruger and Magpul. The combination of those two names should instantly excite you.

The star of the show is the Fire Control Insert that can be moved from grip to grip with ease to maximize modularity. Magpul’s Enhanced Grip comes in multiple colors and features a flared magwell, accessory rail, and a slight trigger guard undercut.

With the money you saved up front, be sure to grab some defensive ammo.

Ruger brings you the slide, which features a direct-mount optic cut slide that can accept various footprints, such as RMR, Delta Point Pro, and RMSc. Additionally, it has co-witness-height steel sights, with the front being a tritium night sight.

Did I mention that it takes Glock magazines? Well, it does, so add that to the list of pros!

Shield Plus

For its size, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus delivers a surprising capacity of 15+1 with the factory extended magazine. When you pair the extra length from the extended magazine with the ergonomic 18-degree grip angle, the pistol feels superb in hand.

Capacity aside, you’ll find things like an optics-ready slide with front and rear serrations and a flat face trigger that, in my opinion, is one of the better ones in the micro-compact realm. It doesn’t necessarily have a ton more note-worthy features, but it’s as reliable as they come.

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield Plus 13+1 capacity

You can opt for the 13-round magazine if you’d like even better concealment.

I stopped counting a while ago, but I’ve probably put over 2,000 rounds through mine with no major issues to note, and it’s happily eaten any ammo I’ve fed it. With its reliability and high amount of aftermarket support, it’s a great pistol for many different roles.

Springfield XD Mod.4 OSP

As long as you’re OK with the grip safety (which does take some getting used to), this is one of the better values on the market with an MSRP of only $399. No, $399 is not a typo.

Hard to believe it retails under $400. Source

You still get an optics-ready slide with a fiber optic front sight, an ambidextrous mag release, and an accessory rail. It does come with only one 16-round magazine, but at least they aren’t overly expensive to pick up a few more.

The trigger isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s far from the worst I’ve experienced, and it’s consistent once you get used to it. For under $400, it’s hard to beat the XD Mod.4 OSP.

Taurus GX4 Carry T.O.R.O.

When I got my hands on the GX4 Carry T.O.R.O. (Taurus Optics Ready Option), I was pleasantly surprised. It may not look like it, but it’s ergonomic and an extremely flat shooter.

Taurus listened to consumers and improved upon the previous GX4 by adding an accessory rail, which is always preferred, especially if the gun is going to fill a defensive role. You’ll also be able to mount your preferred Holosun K-series footprint and similar optics with ease.

The slide cuts could use some work, and the trigger leaves a bit to be desired, but the gun runs great. I’ve only put a few hundred rounds through mine, but I’ve yet to experience a malfunction regardless of ammo type.

It comes with two 15-round magazines, but make sure to save up for some ammo too, as this pistol comes in right around the $400 mark.

How We Evaluated

While I don’t own every one of these, I have shot them. Pairing my experiences with feedback from fellow shooters and reviews online confirmed my choices. While reliability was the primary box to be checked when making this list, I also wanted each pistol to be customizable and offer a solid capacity.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard to argue with any of these when you find them under $400 brand new. With the money you save on the upfront pistol purchase, you can buy some ammo or accessories and focus on training, which is the most important.

Don’t let the guy behind the counter and your local gun store make you feel as if you “need” to spend more. If you have the means, yes, there are many better guns, but these should still do the job and keep you protected.

Until next time, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
