If you want a pistol that hits like a truck but still handles nicely, the .45 ACP might just be for you.
It’s a versatile and hard-hitting cartridge that is known for its reliability and suppressed performance. While you’ll typically find lower magazine capacities than some of their 9mm counterparts, some .45 ACP pistols have made great strides forward to keep up.

A perfect pairing. Source
Whether you’re looking for a combat, competition, or solid “do it all” pistol, you’ll have plenty to choose from in 2025.
Glock 21 Gen5 MOS
It should come as no surprise that the Glock 21 Gen5 MOS made this list. Nobody can argue with the reliability and aftermarket support that the Glock platform brings to the table.
The G21 is a full-size offering, similar to your Glock 17, but obviously packs a meaner punch. It’s a straight workhorse that features an optics-ready slide, full-size accessory rail, plus front and rear slide serrations. You’ll be able to add your favorite light and optic with no issues.

Glock and Aimpoint make for a solid collaboration! Source
From an ergonomic perspective, Glock went with its Modular Backstrap System (MBS), a traction frame texture, and an ambidextrous slide stop lever. You’ll find it comes with a standard 13+1 capacity, which makes it just enough to fill almost any role.
Sig P220
If DA/SA and steel construction are your style, the P220 Legion is going to be the .45 pistol for you. It’s going to cost you about double compared to the Glock, but you’re going to get superior ergonomics, a fantastically crisp trigger, and Sig’s Electro-Optics X-RAY night sights.

Not a bad-looking pistol. Source
Special attention has been paid to even the smallest of details, as you’ll find a contoured beavertail, additional checkering under the trigger guard to enhance the grip, and even low-profile decocking and slide-catch levers to mitigate snagging.
The downside to the gun is its limited capacity, as it comes with a less-than-impressive 8-round magazines. However, that can easily be remedied by carrying a spare magazine or two.
Or you can upgrade to a 10-round magazine with sleeve to bump those numbers up!
FNX-45 Tactical
Did the lower capacity and lack of tactical features leave you less than excited about the Sig P220? If so, the FNX-45 Tactical is going to be one you’ll want to check out right away.

With that color scheme, you can’t not like it. Source
This pistol has everything you can want for a “do it all” battle and defensive setup. A threaded barrel and tall night sights make for the perfect suppressor host, plus the full-size accessory rail provides plenty of room for your favorite lights like the Streamlight TLR-1 HL or SureFire X300T-B Turbo.
It also offers an impressive 15+1 standard capacity, which earns some serious brownie points compared to the previous two pistols we looked at. Lastly, it comes with interchangeable backstraps and is fully ambidextrous, making for a remarkably comfortable shooter.
HK USP45 Tactical
The HK USP45 Tactical delivers incredible versatility and adjustability, giving you arguably the most custom feel out of any pistol on this list.
What sets it apart is its adjustable trigger and target-type sights, which enable increased accuracy right out of the box. Once you pair those with the patented HK recoil reduction system, you have one very flat shooter.

Hard to go wrong with an all-black aesthetic. Source
Although you won’t be able to mount an optic, it does come with a threaded barrel for a suppressor and offers a 12+1 capacity. At the end of the day, the performance potential is what most grab one for.
Smith & Wesson M&P45 M2.0
Smith & Wesson has really stepped up its game over the last several years, and the updated M2.0 models show that. What is also impressive is the price tag; it falls much closer to the Glock’s price than any of the others on this list.
It has all the fixings, from an optics-ready slide to a threaded barrel to tall sights. What sets it apart is its crisp, flat trigger and optimal 18-degree grip angle, which provides a natural point of aim.
It also comes with four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts for a custom fit, but less-than-impressive 10-round magazines. S&W does offer an extended magazine though, which puts you at 14+1. We highly recommend grabbing a couple if you go this route.
Final Thoughts
There’s no single “best” .45 pistol; it’s all going to come down to what you’re looking for.
Want rock-solid reliability and tons of aftermarket options? Grab a Glock 21. Want a nicer trigger and a premium feel? The Sig P220 Legion will surely do the trick. I think you get the idea; it’s all about your preferences.
You can’t go wrong with any of these options, but whatever you choose, be sure to train with it, especially if you’re going to have it serve a defensive role, such as concealed carry or home defense.
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
