The AR-15 is often praised for its modularity, and for good reason. There are no other rifles that allow the shooter to tailor ergonomics, balance, and performance as precisely as an AR.
While optics, triggers, and barrels tend to dominate most build discussions, there are many other essential parts that shouldn’t be ignored. One of which is the rifle’s stock, as it’s the primary point of contact between the shooter and the rifle, influencing recoil control and sight alignment. A poorly chosen stock can make even a high-end rifle feel awkward, while the right stock can dramatically improve comfort, consistency, and confidence behind the gun.
Different shooting scenarios and use cases place very different demands on a stock. Think how a duty or training rifle may prioritize adjustability and durability, while a budget-conscious build simply needs something that fits well. Plus, each shooter has their own preferences. Because of this, there is no single “best” AR-15 stock, only the best stock for a specific user.
What to Look for in an AR-15 Stock
When choosing an AR-15 stock, several factors should be considered before settling on a specific model. One of the most important factors is the material and overall construction.
Most modern stocks are made from reinforced polymer, aluminum, or a combination of both. High-quality polymer stocks can be extremely durable while remaining lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for hard-use rifles. Stocks with aluminum components tend to offer increased rigidity and precision, but often come with added weight.
Weight itself is another critical consideration. A lightweight stock can dramatically improve a rifle’s handling and make it more comfortable to carry over long periods, while heavier stocks can improve balance and recoil impulse. Precision shooters often prefer a slightly heavier stock because it helps stabilize the rifle and maintain consistency between shots.
Adjustability and attachment points are other factors that separate basic stocks from higher-end designs. Whether it’s length-of-pull or cheek-rise height, adjustability lets you tailor the stock to your liking. Additionally, the more QD swivels or sling loops available on the stock, the more adjustability and customization options there are.
Finally, features such as internal storage, locking mechanisms, and compatibility with standard buffer tubes should be weighed based on actual need rather than novelty. Storage compartments can be extremely useful for carrying batteries or small tools, but they add weight and bulk. Locking mechanisms that reduce movement on the buffer tube can improve stability, especially on adjustable stocks, but simpler designs may be more than adequate for many users.
Ultimately, the best stock is one that enhances your shooting needs without adding unnecessary complexity.
Best Overall Stock – B5 Systems BRAVO
The B5 Systems BRAVO stock is one that I run on several of my builds. It offers one of the most complete sets of features without sacrificing any completely, and despite having its host of high-quality features, it surprisingly doesn’t break the bank.
Constructed from Mil-Spec materials and finishes, and featuring an improved sure grip stock latch, it’s incredibly durable and remains secure through rigorous use. You’ll also find a solid cheek well and both a QD sling mount and sling loops.
One small feature many people may not know about is the built-in multi-tool holder hidden behind the buttpad. It doesn’t come with the tool, but at least you can store it there if you purchase it separately!
Best Budget Stock – Magpul MOE
Don’t let the term “budget” fool you; the Magpul MOE stock has been delivering quality and consistency for many years. If you don’t own one personally, you’ve very likely seen one at the range or your local gun store.

Basic yet highly functional. Source
It has everything you need, and nothing you don’t; a sloping cheek weld for comfort, a shielded release latch that prevents snagging, and multiple sling loops. It doesn’t have a super thick buttpad, storage, or QD attachment points, but at this price, it’s tough to complain.
At the end of the day, you get Magpul quality and consistency at a great price.
Best Lightweight Stock – MFT Battlelink
If you’re searching for one of the lightest stocks on the market, the Mission First Tactical (MFT) Battlelink should be at the top of your list.

It doesn’t get much more minimalistic and lightweight. Source
MFT reduces weight everywhere it can while still giving you multiple sling attachment points, a decent-sized cheek weld, and a generously sized buttpad. They may not be the most comfortable, but they get the job done without weighing your rifle down.
These stocks are extremely popular on SBRs and lightweight rifles that aim to maximize maneuverability.
Best Minimalist Stock – Magpul MOE SL
You may be wondering why the MFT Battelink above didn’t claim the “Best Minimalist Stock” position. Well, for many shooters, the Battlelink is a bit “too minimalistic,” and that’s where the Magpul MOE SL (Slim Line) comes into play.
It weighs in at 9.3 ounces, so it’s not necessarily lighter than many others, but it offers the ergonomics and comfort you’ve come to appreciate from larger stocks, just in a Slim Line package. You’ll find it has a nice, angled rubber buttpad, multiple sling attachment points, and dual-side release latches… most of what you want, and not much more.
Best Precision Stock – Magpul PRS Gen3
When you want to push your rifle to its limits in terms of distance, the Magpul PRS (Precision Rifle/Sniper) Gen3 will be there to help. It’s much larger than the others on the list, but it provides a more stable, adjustable base for your long-distance shooting needs.

Adjustability and control are top priorities with the Magpul PRS Gen3. Source
Everything from the length of pull to cheek piece height to the cant and height of the buttpad is adjustable. If you can’t achieve a comfortable shooting position with this stock, I’m not sure you ever can. Of course, you have your sling mounting options, and you’ll even find bottom M-LOK slots for other attachments.
It’s the most pricey on the list, but you most definitely get what you pay for.
Best Storage Stock – B5 Systems Enhanced SOPMOD
The B5 Systems Enhanced SOPMOD almost took the top spot, but some shooters don’t require or prefer storage, so the BRAVO tends to fit a broader range of builds. The Enhanced SOPMOD shares all of the same features as the BRAVO, but provides dual water-resistant storage compartments!
You may be wondering what you can really store in those compartments. Everything from spare batteries to small tools to your favorite candy can fit snuggly inside them!
Conclusion
Choosing the right AR-15 stock ultimately comes down to understanding how the rifle will be used and what characteristics matter most for that role. Whether prioritizing lightweight performance, adaptability, precision, or affordability, the stock should complement the rifle rather than complicate it.
You really can’t go wrong with any of these, but it’s still worth doing your research and choosing carefully.
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun!
