The Glock 17 needs no introduction, but the Glock 47 is a newcomer to the civilian Glock market. Built for Border Patrol, it features a shortened dust cover for modularity between the Glock 19 and 45 slides.
This modularity makes the 47 frame a fantastic addition to any Glock enthusiast’s armory. Its parts are interchangeable with those of other popular Glock models, so if you own a 17, 19, 19x, or 45, the 47 will provide you with plenty of options.

No, that’s not a Glock 17. Look again! Source
And with this modularity comes the capability to use similar magazines as well.
Today, we’re going to dive into Glock 17 and 47 magazines, so you can save time and get straight to what you need.
Why Trust Me?
I’m fortunate to get to shoot every week, and most of the guys in my shooting group run a Glock. So at any given time of the week, I’m surrounded by more Glocks than an armorer at a local police department.
19s, 17s, 34s, 47s, you name it, and we’re shooting with them. This has allowed me to experience the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Factory Magazines
These genuine Glock magazines are the ones you’re going to want for any defensive purposes. Will you be carrying your Glock? Is your Glock part of your home defense plan? If you answered yes to either, stick with these.
Glock Gen 5 17-Round Magazine
The infamous 17-round Glock magazine! These are the exact magazines you receive with your purchase of a Glock 17 or 47.
Featuring a durable polymer body with a full-length steel insert, you never have to worry about taking it easy. The anti-tilt polymer follower keeps them running smoothly, and the rear-facing numbered witness holes help you keep track of your remaining capacity.
These aren’t fancy, but they are proven. OEM Glock magazines will run for a long, long time!
Glock Gen 5 19X 19-Round Magazine
These magazines come with the Glock 19X and are the only 19-round magazines available for use with the Glock 17/47. Unless you go aftermarket, but why do that when you can get the extra reassurance of Glock reliability?
Take note of the coyote brown color and extended baseplate, which allows for the inclusion of those extra rounds; that contrasting color will also help your eyes catch the magazines on faster reloads. Sounds crazy, I know, but that’s experience talking.
Glock Gen 5 24-Round Magazine
Fancy yourself an extended magazine? This 24-round Glock mag is just the trick to keep those rounds coming. It’s not the most concealable magazine in the world, but that’s not why you’re looking for an extended magazine.
These magazines are perfect for breaking in new Glocks and for fun with PCCs. The capacity isn’t so much that you’re spending most of your time reloading, and you have the extra ammo to extend your range trip or beef up your home security.
They have the same steel-lined polymer construction and other features as the standard 17-rounder above, but deliver much-appreciated extra rounds!
Glock Gen 5 33-Round Magazine
Want a little more than 24 rounds, but don’t need a drum mag? This 33-round OEM magazine is for you.
These are great for the range but can be unwieldy for home defense. I’d recommend a speed loader for these as well. Trust me, your fingers start to hurt after reloading them a few times.
Otherwise, it’s a ton of fun! And the icing on the cake is that you can get fancy with colors such as FDE and OD Green!
Glock Gen 5 10-Round Magazine
If you just so happen to live in a state where your rights are constantly being infringed upon, then you’ll probably already own some of these. There’s nothing remarkable about 10-round magazines, so I’ll spare you the time.
That said, you’ll get the trusted Glock build quality, and they could save weight when carrying.
Aftermarket & Extended Magazines
For fun at the range or saving a few bucks on spare magazines, these aftermarket options can do the trick.
Mec-Gar 9mm 18-Round Magazine For Glock Pistols
Mec-Gar has been making magazines before Glock introduced the 17. Since 1965, the Italian magazine maker has been trusted by dozens of OEM manufacturers to produce their magazines, including CZ, Sig Sauer, Beretta, and Colt for some time.
Now, Mec-Gar has focused its expertise on Glocks and provided us with a steel magazine of the highest quality.
The anti-tilt polymer follower is such a bright green that it can probably be seen in the dark. And one thing is for sure: these mags run hard, and the best part is you don’t have to replace your factory magazine release to use them.

ProMag 50-Round Drum Magazine For Glock Pistols
As far as usability goes, these have almost none outside of the range, but if you get to dump the entire mag as quickly as possible, they are extremely fun to shoot.
The drum is made of a proprietary DuPont Zytel polymer, and the tower features a steel liner, allowing this magazine to deliver superior durability. Additionally, you’ll find a hand crank on the drum that helps with loading the rounds and saves you some time at the range.
So if concealment isn’t your biggest concern, and having the utmost fun is, snag a drum.

Conclusion
Having spare magazines or fun magazines never hurt anyone. In fact, they better prepare you in case one of your primary magazines breaks or if SHTF.

No safe is complete without a Glock 17. Source
That said, I want to emphasize once again the importance of having factory magazines for defensive purposes. You don’t want to grab a Pro-Mag drum when things are getting out of hand and hope for the best.
Any of these magazines will deliver a good time; it’s up to you which one(s) you want to stock up on!
Be good and take care.
