It has been a year full of awesome new pistol releases from many of the largest manufacturers. The features are getting more impressive every year, and 2025 has surely not disappointed.

From the beautiful M&P Metal Carry Comp to the VP9A1 that has put both S&W and H&K in a class of their own, there have been plenty of pistols that have been added to our list of “wants and needs”.

If you’re wondering which pistols struck a chord or looking for a great gun to buy, you’ll find it here. These are just a few of our favorites from 2025.

Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp

Smith & Wesson gave us what I consider my favorite pistol of 2025. The M&P 2.0 series, in itself, was a knockout with all the upgrades. From how the gun shoots to how it feels in the hand compared to the first-generation M&P, it was a massive improvement.

But the Metal series sealed the deal. Even if you based it solely on looks, it would still be a top contender. Now, you take those looks that could kill and throw a beautiful slide compensator on the end, and we have what I think is the most eye-catching pistol we’ve ever seen from the factory.

How could you argue with those curves? Source

Don’t you think?

On the range, you get those looks translated on paper. The flat-faced trigger by itself is revolutionary, and the optimized grip angle is fantastic. It’s not just a mantle piece.

If I had to choose one, the M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp would be the best in 2025.

HK VP9A1 Series

But that’s not easy to say when you have the VP9A1 on the range. If you haven’t shot one yet, it’s hard to judge, but I have a friend who frequents the range and carries a VP9A1K, and it couldn’t have been more of a shock on paper.

I have absolutely no idea how Heckler and Koch did it, but it’s one of the smoothest-shooting and ergonomic pistols on the market. It’s not fancy, it doesn’t have the skeletonized trigger or integral compensator that you find on similar shooting pistols. But it shoots on a different level of great.

It’s not often that we say that a better pistol can help with shooting, but it can be true. Shooting is 90% skill and 10% the gun you shoot. Sometimes, the pistol comes with everything from the factory. And it’s just a breeze to get the job done.

The VP9A1K is one of those pistols.

Staccato HD P4

Staccato dominates the 2011 market, which has taken the pistol world to new levels. While extremely expensive, these pistols are another example of ones that can help you shoot better.

If you’ve shot a Staccato, then you understand precisely what I’m saying. If you haven’t, then shooting one over time will spoil you. The recoil is effortless, and every aspect of it feels premium. From the bull barrel to the flat wire recoil system, it all comes together to deliver an excellent shooting experience.

Amazing performance from an old classic. If only they didn’t cost a fortune. Source

The HD P4 is no different. It just takes that ease of use and shortens it down to an easier-to-carry size, with the ability to use Glock-pattern magazines. 2011s are expensive on their own, and the magazines tend to be just as expensive. They are wonderful magazines, but the Glock magazine does the job just fine.

Staccatos are worth the cost, but I recommend perfecting your fundamentals with something basic like a Glock before stepping up to one of these. You may not appreciate how great they are if you start at the top.

Speaking of Glocks.

Glock Gen6

Not only did we get the Glock V-Series in 2025, but Glock also surprised us with the Gen6 line. Glock has listened to much of what users have been asking for and responded accordingly!

The Gen6 line is not simply an added feature here or a small tweak there; it’s delivering a new shooting experience for the platform. Right when you pick it up, the difference is immediately noticeable thanks to the new texturing, undercut trigger guard, and enlarged beavertail.

Glock Gen6

The same but MUCH different.

It also features a new optic mounting system, new thumb rests (gas pedals), and updated internals. Thankfully, all of your Gen5 mags are compatible, which is one area we are happy to see stay the same!

CZ Shadow 2 Carry

CZ has been quietly proving itself for a long time. You don’t hear bad things about CZ pistols, and the Shadow 2 is another one that works great in the right hands. It’s exceptionally well balanced, and the sight radius makes accuracy easy to achieve. The optics-ready variant has been huge in the carry-optics USPCA competition category.

Performance and aesthetics collide. Source

It’s an incredibly smooth shooter, and it’s keeping hammer-fired pistols alive. Everything from the ergonomics to the reliability to its aesthetics is all on point.

Conclusion

As you can see, 2025 has been an excellent year for pistols. Smith & Wesson, Heckler & Koch, and CZ all achieved outstanding balance in their pistols, and accuracy was super easy to achieve when I shot them; it was hard to ask for more after I was done. And of course, it’s always hard to argue with Glock and Staccato in general.

If I had to choose one, it’s hard, but it would be the Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 Metal Carry Comp. It’s beautiful, and it shoots great. You can’t ask for anything else from a factory pistol with this one, and I think it’s a strong competitor for pistol of the year.

We shall see.

Be good and take care.
