Pistol-caliber carbines (PCC) have taken the firearms industry by storm over the last several years, with new models coming out constantly. Hey, I’m not complaining; I’m all for more competition in the marketplace!
I’ll admit that it took me a while to hop on the PCC bandwagon. I had my go-to handguns and rifles and didn’t really see the appeal of PCCs. However, once I gave them a shot (pun intended) and did some more research, my mind quickly changed.
In case the context clues weren’t quite enough, a pistol-caliber carbine is just what it sounds like: a long gun chambered in a pistol caliber. To muddy the waters a bit, they come in all lengths and calibers, so they aren’t necessarily “long.”
PCC vs. Rifle vs. Handgun?
While many of you are probably familiar with the common roles of handguns and rifles, you may not be as familiar with the PCCs. So, where does a PCC come into play if you already have both of the other platforms? I’m glad you asked.
From home protection to competitions to plain old range fun, PCCs can fill many different roles. They provide the shooter with a higher capacity than a pistol, less recoil than a traditional rifle caliber, and the ability to cross-utilize magazines depending on which type of PCC and handgun you have.
For example, the Aero Precision EPC-9 takes Glock magazines, so if you also run Glock handguns, you can share magazines between them.
I wouldn’t go as far as saying PCCs combine only the best of both worlds, but I do believe they are much more versatile and functional than people give them credit for.
So, without further ado…
Best PCCs of 2026
Here are some of our favorite PCCs available in 2026. Some have been around for years, while others are newcomers to the arena.
Sig Sauer MPX
If you don’t have a budget and want one of the best PCCs money can buy, the Sig Sauer MPX is worth considering.

It comes loaded with high-end features so that you won’t have to spend any additional money on upgrades. From the Timney single-stage trigger to the three-chamber recoil-reducing compensator found on several models, it’s ready for high performance straight out of the box.
You’ll receive an ultra-reliable and accurate firearm with a gas pistol operating system and carbon steel barrel.
Springfield Armory Kuna
Springfield released the Kuna earlier this year, and it was an instant hit. From its roller-delayed operating system to its flat trigger to its ambidextrous controls, it checks almost any box you can think of for a capable PCC/PDW. Best of all, thanks to the included flip-up hybrid sights, you are genuinely ready to go out of the box. You don’t need to add anything to it to start sending rounds downrange.
It features a Picatinny rail on top and a few M-LOK slots so you can add all your favorite optics and accessories. The AR-style grip enhances ergonomics, and when paired with the brace, you get a very easy-to-control firearm.
The only downside is that there are very few aftermarket magazine options. Thankfully, even the factory mags are affordable!
Aero Precision EPC-9
The Aero Precision EPC-9 is one of the best “budget” PCCs. You’ll still wind up spending around $1,000, but compared to many others, that’s a steal.
It comes with many nice features that you won’t find on true budget PCCs, such as the last round bolt hold open, a flared magwell, and plenty of handguard options that include full-length Picatinny rails.
Aero offers a wide variety of upper receivers, lower receivers, and individual components, so you have almost endless configurations.
I’ve put several hundred rounds through it so far, and it’s never skipped a beat.
Battle Arms Development XIPHOS
The XIPHOS is perfect for those looking for a lightweight PCC, weighing under six pounds even with a 16-inch barrel and 15-inch handguard.
It may be light, but it is still as durable as they come. It features a 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum receiver, an 8620 steel black nitride blow-back bolt, and a plethora of upgraded components.

It has a rather futuristic aesthetic, which is ideal for those who want to stand out from the crowd at the range.
Overall, it’s a very solid PCC that costs a pretty penny but should last a very long time.
CMMG Banshee
When talking about PCCs, we couldn’t forget about the CMMG Banshee. CMMG offers the Banshee in a wide array of calibers, from .22 LR to 10mm and every other caliber in between.

Most models come loaded with upgraded furniture, ambidextrous controls, and your choice of Cerakote finish. One of the main factors that sets this gun apart from the rest is the Radial Delayed Blowback operating system, which delivers a softer recoil than traditional straight blowback systems.
It’s more expensive than the Aero Precision EPC-9 but less expensive than the Sig Sauer MPX, so it’s a nice middle ground that appeals to many.
Final Thoughts
You really can’t go wrong with any of the above-mentioned PCCs, but if I had to pick, I’d probably go with either the CMMG Banshee or Aero EPC-9. They each provide the durability and reliability I expect out of any of my firearms, while not breaking the bank.
So when you’re ready for your next firearm, don’t rule out a PCC. They are a ton of fun, can save you money while training, and can fill almost any role.
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
