Not many people get excited when they hear a new Hi-Point is being released. I, on the other hand, do.

Are they going to win any beauty contests? No way. Are they the most accurate? Nope. Do they come loaded with the latest and greatest features the market has to offer? Not a chance.

The camo finish helps the aesthetics drastically!

However, what they do bring to the table, from my personal experience, is a surprising level of reliability. Not only that, they come in at a price point that allows those with very limited budgets to defend themselves.

What started as a “fun” review of an early C9 model years ago turned into a fascination with these ultra-affordable firearms once I saw it eat every type of 9mm ammo I put through it.

So when I heard Hi-Point was releasing pistol variants of its popular PCC line, I made sure to add their booth to my list of stops at SHOT Show this year.

What’s New

Hi-Point’s PCC line offers several caliber options, with the most popular being 9mm (model 995), 10mm (model 1095), and .45 ACP (model 4595). When you think of PCCs, terms like compact and lightweight likely come to mind, but let’s just say the current carbine line does not exactly fit those descriptors.

The new pistol variants, however, shave a significant amount of length and corresponding weight by coming without any stock or brace.

Instead, you’ll find a machined receiver end plate that features a Picatinny rail and an integrated QD socket. This allows you to add your favorite folding adaptor or sling right out of the box, but there is also a “hidden feature” to note as well. You can remove the end plate and install a standard AR-pistol buffer tube easily. This gives you the flexibility to use almost any style brace you can think of.

Folding shovel handle or standard brace?

Hi-Point also chopped a few inches off the barrel but kept it threaded in case you want to get fancy and suppress it. You instantly have a much more maneuverable firearm by removing the stock and shortening the barrel and handguard.

It’s important to remember that with the shorter barrel comes accessory and furniture limitations, so be careful with what you choose to install.

HiViz fiber optic front sight

New sights are a cause for excitement.

One last new feature to note is the addition of a HiViz fiber optic front sight, which marks a considerable improvement from the previous sights. Looking at these changes as a whole, I can easily see the pistol line becoming more popular than the carbine line.

Standard Features

There are several features that the older carbines and newer pistols have in common.

To accommodate most of your accessory preferences, you’ll find a Picatinny rail on top of the upper receiver and the bottom of the handguard. So if those Hi-Viz sights still don’t do it for you, you can throw on an optic with no issues.

All controls are found on the left side, including the charging handle, manual safety, and magazine release; no ambidextrous controls. At this price point, though, I wouldn’t expect them.

However, there are a few surprises in the boxes. Upon opening the box for the first time, I was shocked to see a set of accessories such as a sling, swivels, trigger lock, and, of course, a magazine. Not too bad for a few hundred dollar gun.

Magazines

My biggest gripe with any of the Hi-Point firearms is the magazines. You would think maybe they would accept Glock magazines…nope. Your only options are the factory magazine(s) your gun comes with or, for specific models, aftermarket Redball extended magazines that leave much to be desired. Add one or two ProMag magazines, and you’ll have exhausted your options.

Final Thoughts

Many individuals have chosen a Hi-Point as their dedicated truck/vehicle gun due to its reliability and affordability. If your car gets broken into and the gun gets stolen, it’s not an ideal situation, but at least you’d only be out a few hundred dollars.

Now, with these more compact variants coming, you could store them even more easily in your vehicle if you choose to do so. Disclaimer: I am not telling you to keep one in your vehicle. I recommend you research and follow your local laws and regulations and decide for yourself!

Now, I can wrap up the article with that out of the way.

I get that these pistols may not excite you as much as they do me, but I challenge you to get your hands on a Hi-Point, tailor your expectations given the price point, and then hit the range. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, at least from a reliability standpoint. And they are quite the conversation starters, so you may even make a new friend!

As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
