If you’re anything like me, when you see that KelTec has released a new gun, your first thought is something along the lines of “What now”? And that’s not necessarily being said in a negative way.
KelTec has brought some very unique offerings to market, such as the RFB 7.62 bullpup rifle and the extremely popular SUB2000 folding carbine. The former hasn’t captured the hearts of many, but the opposite could be said for the latter.
Now, with the 5.7x28mm cartridge taking off, KelTec has released the PR57 rotary barrel pistol. Yes, you read that correctly; a rotary barrel pistol, meaning no detachable magazines are used.

The unique design results in simplicity, with fewer parts that could fail and less of a price tag behind it. Sticking with the theme of “less,” it also weighs less than you would expect, at just under 14 ounces.
Even though we are a magazine retailer, we strive to bring you the most newsworthy and interesting articles, so we had to cover this “interesting” new release.
PR57 Features
Of course, the main features are its top-loading design and rotary barrel. You can either manually load one round at a time or use the included 10-round stripper clips. You’d be surprised how quickly you can load the gun when using the stripper clips, but don’t think for a second it’ll be as quick as a traditional stick magazine.

As with most new pistols these days, you’ll find an optics-ready slide, with this one featuring the RMSc footprint. This means you’ll be able to mount a wide variety of popular optics such as the Holosun EPS Carry or Vortex Defender CCW.
If you want to use it as a defensive pistol, the accessory rail allows you to add many of your favorite lights. I highly recommend one to help you identify your target(s).

Small details matter, and it’s worth noting that it’s a very easy gun to use, due to the lack of traditional controls such as a magazine release or manual safety. All you have is the trigger and slide lock to manipulate. It’s also very easy to field strip by pushing the trigger forward and pulling the slide off. That’s pretty unique.
I haven’t had the chance to shoot one yet, but the trigger pull weighs in at a stated 4.5 pounds and is said to have a slightly long but smooth pull.

Range time with the PR57 is on my to-do list. Source

Not Sold On The PR57?
Look, I wouldn’t blame you if you weren’t sold on the PR57. I know I’m not.
However, if you are intrigued by the 5.7x28mm round but just not the PR57, I would recommend you take a look at the SUB2000. It’s KelTec’s folding carbine that utilizes a traditional box magazine, has plenty of room for accessories, and is extremely versatile thanks to its portability.

Or, if you want a KelTec pistol, but aren’t sold on the 5.7x28mm round or rotary design of the PR57, check out the P15. Chambered in 9mm and boasting a 15+1 capacity utilizing standard stick magazines, it’s a competing option for concealed carry or home defense.

KelTec has plenty of other offerings as well if you’re interested in researching them, but I recommend checking out these two first.
Final Thoughts
On paper, the PR57 looks to be a really solid concealed carry contender, especially for those in restricted states. It’s definitely not going to be for everyone, myself included, but I am very interested in taking it for a spin at the range.

If there is one thing KelTec does consistently, it’s deliver unique and affordable firearms. We’ll try to get our hands on a PR57 for a review, but until then, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
