PPK vs PPK/S – What’s the Difference

One of the most common questions surrounding these pistols is magazine compatibility. Although the Walther PPK and PPK/S appear very similar, they are not identical firearms. The original PPK has a shorter grip frame, while the PPK/S has a slightly larger frame to accommodate a larger capacity.

That difference directly impacts magazine fitment.

Usually, a Walther PPK/S magazine will be longer than a standard PPK magazine due to the extra grip length. Many parts of the pistols are common, but the magazines are usually different for each model.

A Walther PPK/S magazine designed for the larger frame may fit into a standard PPK, but, a standard PPK magazine might not fit the PPK/S’s grip length.

Many shooters appreciate the extra grip space and support of the PPK/S, as it gives them more control without adding too much bulk to the pistol.

Caliber Options and Magazine Differences

The Walther PPK family has seen a number of different calibers throughout its history.

The .380 ACP is still the most popular caliber in the United States. A Walther PPK 380 magazine typically holds six rounds in the standard PPK and seven rounds in the PPK/S configuration.

The .32 ACP versions are also still popular. They’re easier to shoot due to their lighter recoil, and several factory magazines are still available for them.

The .22 LR versions are quite different. The PPK/S .22 LR is a low-cost training and recreational firearm that uses 10-round magazines designed for the rimfire pistol.

Because of these different chamberings, magazine compatibility depends on both the model and the caliber. Although the size may seem close, a .380 magazine will not fit into a .32 ACP pistol.

Types of Walther PPK Magazines

The PPK family offers several different magazine configurations. The old-style flush-fit magazine is still a popular choice among concealed carriers. It features a shorter design, which maintains the compact profile that made the PPK so popular in the first place.
