When it comes to rimfire pistols, they are definitely not all as reliable as one another. That said, the Taurus TX22 is highly regarded as one of the most reliable offerings on the market.
Since it’s risen in popularity, we’ve been lucky enough to see several different capacity magazines and even a few aftermarket ones released. To help you keep them all straight, we’ve developed this handy buying guide.
Whether you’re looking for extra magazines for the range or defensive purposes, The Mag Shack has you covered. However, .22 LR is widely considered not powerful enough for defensive use, but if it’s what you choose, we want to ensure you are covered!
Home Defense/Concealed Carry
If you are going to use your TX22 for home defense or concealed carry, I strongly recommend you stick with factory magazines. Rimfire ammunition is already known to be less reliable than centerfire, so OEM magazines are a great way to mitigate any additional reliability reduction!
TX22 Standard
Here is the exact magazine that your standard TX22 came with. So if you’re looking for a direct replacement or a few spares, this is your magazine, and it doesn’t get any more reliable.
Its durability is top-notch, with an impact-resistant polymer construction and a high-quality steel spring. You’ll find a side-facing load-assist lever that makes reloading quick and easy, and the channel doubles as a witness window!
The baseplate sits flush with the grip, so if you plan to conceal carry, it’ll have as small a footprint as possible.
As great as the 16-round magazine is, this would be my most highly recommended magazine for the TX22. Take the same high-quality magazine from above and add a +6 magazine extension for more firepower.
Despite the additional size, this magazine remains lightweight thanks to the impact-resistant polymer used for the extended base plate. And while it may be just a tad harder to conceal, you’ll have extra real estate for your fingers to secure a proper grip, and of course, the extra rounds in case whatever you need it for isn’t stopping.
TX22 Compact
You sacrifice three rounds when compared to the standard-sized TX22, but you get a shorter and lighter firearm in return that’s even easier to conceal.
This 13-round magazine features an impact-resistant polymer construction like the ones above, and has the same load-assist tab to save your thumbs.
And if you’ve purchased the TX22 Compact, you’re likely concerned about size, so the fact that this magazine sits perfectly flush should make it that much more appealing.
By now, I’m assuming you can guess what I will say here, so I’ll keep it short and sweet.
This 16-round extended magazine takes your standard-capacity one from above and adds a +3 magazine extension to deliver a few more rounds without adding a ton of weight. The added base plate increases its durability, so you can worry even less if you happen to drop your mag during a reload.
Range Time
TX22 Standard
You may be wondering why you’d buy a 21-round aftermarket magazine when you can buy a 22-round factory magazine, and that’s a valid question.
ProMag’s proprietary DuPont Zytel-based polymer provides fantastic durability, it utilizes a similar load-assist tab, and the real reason….it saves you a few bucks.
If you plan to buy several magazines for strictly range use, these can be a great way to save money to spend on other fun stuff like ammo. These magazines are made here in the USA and backed by a lifetime warranty. What more could you ask for?
Well…you could ask for some more rounds. Enter ProMag’s 34-round extended magazine.
You get 12 more rounds over the factory extended magazine, all while saving a couple of dollars. Do we need to convince you any further?
Compliant
Here’s the obligatory section for those in restricted states that limit your capacity. While it pains us even to need a section like this, everyone deserves to have their magazines covered, so we won’t leave anyone out!
TX22 Standard
Just as durable as the standard capacity OEM magazines, these share all the same features from the impact-resistant polymer construction to the side-facing load-assist tabs. However, you’re only going to be able to fit a total of ten rounds in the magazine, which you probably could have guessed.
If you live in Colorado, you’re still getting the short end of the stick, but at least you’re not getting the SHORTEST end of the stick like the states above. You’ll get 15 rounds and the same durable build quality, so it definitely could be worse!
TX22 Compact
You should know exactly where this is going: polymer construction, side-facing load-assist tabs, and a max capacity of ten rounds. It’s boring, but it is what it is!
Final Thoughts
With how affordable ammo is for your Taurus TX22, you should have no excuse not to have a stockpile of magazines!
If you’re going to be relying on your TX22 for defensive purposes, do yourself a favor and stick with factory Taurus magazines. Seriously. Rimfire ammunition is already spotty enough from a reliability standpoint, so it’s best to mitigate as many issues as possible.
Plain old range time or plinking in the backyard? Take your pick of magazines or even just go with whatever is on sale! Don’t overthink it at that point.

With 16-round and 22-round magazines, the TX22 has more capacity than most .22LR pistols do right out of the box.
Regardless of how you use your TX22 and whether you’re in a restricted state or not, you can find all your magazines here at The Mag Shack!
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
