The HK G36 is one of the most nostalgic firearms of all time. From being in almost every foreign action movie since the late ‘90s to Call of Duty and other shooter games, you can’t look at it and not be hit with, “I remember when that thing was the coolest thing ever”.

It still looks futuristic. Source
Since the G36 has a considerable cult following, it’s only fair that HK give you and me something that can scratch that nostalgic itch while mitigating the problems that plagued the G36.

It looks just like the original. Source
Enter the HK G36 .22LR. Everything you love about the G36, none of what you hate. In a round that’s affordable, fun, and reasonably usable for multiple roles.
I know, it’s not the 5.56×45 version, but you can’t really get your hands on one of those anyway. So here we are.
G36 .22LR: What’s Good With It?
HK partnered with Umarex for the G36 .22LR. If you aren’t familiar with Umarex, they are a German Airsoft and Replica firearm manufacturer. The new G36 has identical markings and features as the 5.56×45 variant but is available to the public.

The classic red and white fire indicators hit different. Source
The short throw safety selector with the iconic red and white fire indicators, Picatinny handguard, folding stock, and charging handle under the handguard are all from the original, just like you used to see in the movies.
The only difference is the chambering. But that makes it fun and more of a utilitarian.
What Can You Use This For?
If I bought a G36 .22LR, I have to be honest with you, I’d mostly use it for plinking. I wouldn’t use it for defensive purposes, I wouldn’t use it for hunting, it would be for fun. There are plenty of firearms out there for the purposes I mentioned. This isn’t one of them.

If only we all had a backyard range like this legend. Source
I suppose you could use it to train with if you’re fortunate enough to have an actual G36, or it can be used for competitions.
But I won’t tell you to use this for defensive purposes by any means unless you have beef with squirrels or birds.
All in all, fun.
.22LR G36 Magazines
You knew this was coming. It’s The Mag Shack!
Thankfully, HK made the G36 .22LR compatible with its 416 magazines, so you’ll be ready to stock up on mags immediately.
30 Round Magazine
To maximize your potential of mowing those Coors Banquet cans down in one go, or want to set up a more close to long range course in the yard, this high-quality polymer 30-round magazine allows you to do so without having to load every five seconds.
And if you want to have that classic look, you’ll need the 30-round magazine.
On the side, you’ll find your typical load-assist tabs. Just pull down and load. Easy as the day is long. And, the load-assist tab channel serves as a witness window. Win-win.
20 Round Magazine
The 20-round magazine shares all of the same traits as the 30-round magazine aside from its capacity. As these magazines started to get smaller, they became more utilitarian.
You can stand and take shots all day long with a 30-round magazine, but getting low to the ground is not as easy. Making those “precise” shots can be more challenging due to the magazine banging on the ground and whatever else it is you use to post up your rifle.
It can be hard hitting a squirrel doing multiple tours around a tree! But the extra space savings should make that easier.
10 Round Magazine
You can, on the other hand, completely turn the .22LR G36 into a DMR with this 10-round mag.
Hear me out. Throw on a scope and a Magpul bipod, and you can sit on your property all day long and take out any critters that may be causing you trouble.
How far out can you take the .22LR? Now that you don’t have a big ol’ magazine turning your rifle into a seesaw, you can place that Bud Light can out to several hundred yards and see who can hit it first.
Every one of these magazines has different uses. It’s essential to take the time to figure out what you’re planning on doing with your G36 .22LR before buying any. To be safe, if you are unsure, buy one of each.
Conclusion
While HK and affordability are rarely found in the same sentence, the G36 .22LR is highly affordable. While it won’t be the first gun you run to in self-defense, it can provide a lifetime of fun and a great way to keep the population of varmints low.

All it needs is an optic, and you’re ready to go! Source
This is a nostalgia piece, and it’s fun to shoot. It brings you back to cool guns, not just guns that are all business. But those that are etched into our hearts, like the Cheytac Intervention. I hope you remember.
Here’s to the guns that are fun to own and look at.
Be good and take care.
