The world is crazier than ever, and things always seem right at the tipping point of spiraling out of control. Thankfully, we haven’t seen nationwide or worldwide unrest, but if we do, you’ll want to be prepared as best possible for when SHTF (sh*t hits the fan).
Traditionally, a battle rifle is chambered in a “full-power” caliber, typically larger than the standard .223/5.56. More often than not, they are chambered in 7.62×51/.308 Winchester and are referred to as AR-10s. Sure, your AR-15 is a versatile and capable defense option, but when you have to be your own first responder and others are likely using body armor, you’ll want to maximize your stopping power.
Keep in mind that these rifles will generally be larger and heavier, so training with them is extremely important. Just as you train with your AR-15, you’ll want to train with your AR-10.
Capacity is another consideration, as most AR-10s come with 20-round magazines. Of course, that’s The Mag Shack can help. If you want just a few more rounds, we have you covered with plenty of 25-round magazines from the biggest names like Magpul and Lancer. Or, if you want to maximize your capacity, we even have a few 50-round drums to choose from.
Many AR-10s will prepare you for battle, but here are five of our favorites to help you start your search on the right foot.
Top Battle Rifles
LWRCI REPR MII
With a high price tag comes high performance, and the LWRCI REPR MII is widely recognized as one of the best AR-10s in the industry.

With a short-stroke gas piston operating system and a patented adjustable gas block, these rifles are extremely reliable. Not only are they reliable, but thanks to the Geissele SSA-E trigger, match-grade barrel, and a 4-port muzzle brake, your accuracy should be on point right out of the box.
Upgraded furniture, ambidextrous controls, and backup sights are all included, so you can go straight from unboxing to the range to train.
Aero Precision M5E1
When you’re looking for a substantial upgrade from entry-level options but don’t want to empty your bank account, I often recommend the Aero Precision M5E1.

Who doesn’t love an FDE build? Source
One of my favorite things about Aero is that you can choose between many different uppers and lowers to create your dream rifle. The M5E1 uppers are forged from 7075-T6 aluminum, and you can choose from a full-length or partial Picatinny rail up top. Do yourself a favor and go with a full-length!
A CMV barrel, low-profile gas block, and rifle-length gas tube will be found within that upper receiver, while the lower receiver features an integrated trigger guard and flared magwell.
Since you’re saving money on the rifle, you’ll have some money left over to upgrade to ambidextrous controls and pick up a few boxes of ammo.
Daniel Defense DD5 V4
Back on the pricey side of the spectrum, the Daniel Defense DD5 V4 provides an extremely durable platform, with upgraded components that deliver superior accuracy and functionality.

I’ll take all of the above, please. Source
The rifle features an innovative 4-Bolt Connection System that increases the connection surface area between the cold hammer forged barrel and the upper receiver. This results in superior stability and rigidity, which in turn leads to higher accuracy.
The receivers are CNC machined out of 7075-T6 aluminum and are Type III Hard Coat Anodized, giving you peace of mind when running these rifles hard. To top it off, you’ll have upgraded furniture and ambidextrous controls—no need to spend extra money on the small stuff afterward.
Ruger SFAR
If you’re looking for an AR-10 that looks and feels just like your AR-15, consider the Ruger SFAR (Small Frame Autoloading Rifle).

It’s not fancy but it gets the job done. Source
It’s compact and lightweight but delivers that extra stopping power you want from a .308 battle rifle. Don’t let the affordability fool you; you will still get quality components such as a threaded 4140 chrome-moly barrel, free-floated M-LOK handguard, and a full-size Picatinny rail up top.
You can add a few extra accessories and a larger magazine while still being within the same weight range as some of the larger AR-10s that are completely stock.
Sig Sauer 716i TREAD
The bang for your buck is way up there with the 716i TREAD from Sig Sauer.
It’s a great-looking rifle but offers much more than its charming looks. Utilizing a reliable Direct Impingement System and featuring a 1:10 twist carbon steel barrel, its reliability and accuracy are top-notch.

No frills and all business. Source
Sig also paid attention to the smaller details, including ambidextrous controls, upgraded furniture, and a polished, hard-coated single-stage trigger.
You get the feeling you’re shooting a more expensive rifle, all while saving a few bucks.
Parting Shots
Each one of these battle rifles will have you more than prepared if…well, it looks more like “when”…SHTF.
These are only a handful of the quality AR-10s worthy of being designated as true battle rifles, so don’t feel like you HAVE to pick from this list. The important thing is that you prepare yourself for whatever or whoever may be coming your way.
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
