Every year, we try to compile lists like this, and while you may see some repeats, we’re fortunate enough to have some newcomers as well, usually. And this year’s list in particular should not disappoint!
While many of these pistols can fit into multiple categories, we went ahead and broke them out into concealed carry, home defense, and competition. Sure, any of them could fill a home defense role, and you could technically carry any of them, but these categories represent realistic roles.
Sit back, enjoy some light reading, and start planning your next pistol purchase!
Concealed Carry Pistols
All of these pistols will offer solid capacities, have the ability to host an optic, and have decent to strong aftermarket support. And since they are more compact, they will be easier to conceal and more comfortable to carry.
Glock 19 Gen6
It’s great to finally say the Gen6 line is here! Arguably one the most popular, the Glock 19 can do it all, including filling the role as your concealed carry companion. It’s one of the most reliable handguns, period, which is a critical factor when choosing a defensive pistol.
The Gen6 comes with several notable improvements over the Gen5 including the improved RTF6 grip texture, a new flat faced dtrigger, and a much more versatile optic system. Of course, you’ll also find the typical front and rear slide serrations and an accessory rail; all the fixings for a fine defensive piece. Additionally, Glocks have the highest level of aftermarket support you can find.
Sure, the sights can still use some work, but with training, they are more than usable, and some even like them! And while it comes with 15-round magazines, it can also use the 17-round magazines from its larger sibling, the Glock 17.
If you happen to choose a Glock 19, you’ll be able to tackle any task.
Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus Carry Comp
The original M&P Shield from Smith & Wesson left a lot to be desired. Since then, we have seen several iterations emerge, each building upon the prior, but only with small enhancements.
But then S&W hit us with the M&P Shield Plus Carry Comp and made sure there was nothing left on the table to wish for (almost). This small but mighty pistol has it all: an optics-ready slide with a ClearSight Cut, a Carry Comp Power Port that diverts gas upwards and tames recoil, a flat-face trigger, and up to a 15+1 capacity.

It’s a good-looking pistol, too. Source
It has one of the cleaner triggers on the market in its size class, and the front night sight helps get on target quickly. The serrations are aggressive enough to help with racking the slide, which is appreciated on a small slide like this.
Overall, it delivers everything a carry pistol should, minus an accessory rail.
Sig Sauer P365-XL
There are several P365 models available, but the XL is one of the best for concealed carry. It’s still compact yet offers a standard 12+1 capacity, and features an optics-ready slide and accessory rail.

You might as well add a Sig red dot while you’re at it. Source
The significant selling feature of the P365 line is its modularity, as you can change grip modules to your heart’s content, thanks to the fire control unit (FCU) being the serialized part of the pistol. The flat-face trigger has a relatively short pull and crisp break, aiding the accuracy right out of the box.
All in all, it’s an ergonomic and easily concealable pistol that will have your back when you need it.
Springfield Hellcat Pro Comp
Coming with a standard 15+1 and 17+1 magazine, it’s hard to beat the Hellcat Pro Comp from a capacity standpoint. This particular Hellcat Pro model also features an integral compensator that helps keep you on target more easily during follow-up shots by redirecting the gas upwards.
Other notable features include an optics-ready slide with night sights, Springfield’s Adaptive Grip Texture (which happens to be one of my personal favorites), and an accessory rail. It also comes with a solid stock trigger and a substantial amount of aftermarket support, making it a strong contender for your next concealed carry weapon.
Home Defense Pistols
When defending your home, I always recommend having a light on your pistol to positively identify your target. You never want just to point and shoot without knowing what it is. Therefore, all of these pistols will be able to host a variety of lights. And of course, they will also come with higher standard capacities.
Glock 17 Gen6
Take the Glock 19 Gen6 from above, lengthen the grip and the barrel, and you get the Glock 17 Gen6.

The same but different. Source
You can still carry it as many do, but it will be a bit harder to conceal. The trade-off? The longer grip allows for flush-fit 17-round magazines, and the longer sight radius can lead to increased accuracy.
With its famous reliability, impressive magazine capacity, and ability to host a wide variety of optics and accessories, it’s one of the best options when it comes to a home defense pistol.
Springfield Echelon 4.5FC
Compensators are the name of the game this year, and the Echelon 4.5F now has a model with an integral one. When you pair it with the already accurate hammer forged barrel, clean and crisp trigger, and its upgraded sights, it’s a force to be reckoned with.

The 4-inch slide paired with a full-size grip makes for a winning combination. Source
The slide features aggressive serrations, along with a flare in the rear, making racking it extremely easy. The grip texture is one of the best in the game, and with the modularity that the Central Operating Group enables, allowing different grips to be used, the ergonomics overall are quite impressive.
Finally, Springfield includes a 17 and 20 round magazine, which will allow you to rest easy knowing you’re adequately covered.
Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0
Once S&W really started listening to consumers, it’s been hitting it out of the park with its more recent M&P offerings.
The full-size M2.0 pistols have all the features you could want: a flat-face trigger, optics-ready slide, accessory rail, and a 17+1 capacity. If you want to splurge and opt for the new Performance Center Carry Comp version, you’ll also receive the Power Port (integral compensator), which will make it even easier to stay on target.

It also comes with interchangeable backstraps. Source
For an out-of-the-box pistol, this is one of my favorites. The sights don’t need to be swapped, the trigger is excellent, and it’s affordable. It’s hard to go wrong with an M&P M2.0.
Walther PDP
Walther doesn’t get near the amount of love these days that it should, in my opinion. It is an extremely well-rounded pistol that brings solid ergonomics, high capacity, and a superior trigger to the table.

The compact or full-size would make a great home defense companion. Source
The trigger pull is very smooth, and the reset is short, allowing you to stay on target with ease. As you can see, it also features an optics-ready slide with front and rear serrations (SuperTerrain Slide Serrations), and an accessory rail to complete the package.
With the full-size model coming with 18-round magazines from the factory, you’ll be well prepared for whatever goes bump in the night.
Competition Pistols
Built for competition, these pistols will feature tuned triggers and longer slides and barrels. You’ll find it difficult to carry these, but if you can, more power to you!
Staccato XL
Since this list features the “top pistols,” the Staccato XL easily takes the cake in the competition arena. That said, you’ll need to pay heavily for what you get, as it’ll break the bank, with an MSRP of $3,599. And that’s before adding an optic or light.

One of the ultimate bosses in the competition world. Source
For that price, you get a 5.4-inch bull barrel, a 2.5-pound tuned trigger, and a Dawson Precision Tool Less Recoil System. It’s crafted to be one of the smoothest and most well-balanced pistols you’ll ever shoot.
It comes standard with two 17-round magazines, but you can also purchase 20-round magazines to maximize your range time.
CZ Shadow 2
If you want to save $1,000+ over the Staccato but still wind up with a fantastic competition pistol, consider the CZ Shadow 2.
The craftsmanship and attention to detail are truly top-notch, and it shows. The hand-fitted barrel-to-slide and slide-to-frame ensure the tightest tolerances possible. Additionally, CZ positioned the ambidextrous safety higher and reduced the height of the magazine release, all to maximize ergonomics.
You’ll find a cold hammer forged bull barrel under the hood and a fantastically clean trigger, driving your shooting experience. Plus, the 19-round magazines will keep you running and gunning for a while.
In the competition realm, this pistol is hard to beat from a value and performance perspective.
Final Thoughts
There are plenty of other guns that could and should be on this list, but we’d be here all day trying to include them all.
That said, any that did make the list above should not disappoint. I have a few of these, and I will likely have them for the foreseeable future. I may even grab another one or two off this list!
We’ll update the list against next year, but until then, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
