There are many “this vs. that” articles in the firearms community, with the Walther PDP vs. HK VP9 being one that I see often.

While I don’t own either of these pistols, I’ve shot them both extensively. I can definitely see why the community seems to be torn between them. From superior ergonomics to impressive capacities, they are not pistols to turn your nose up at.

Today, we’ll examine them more from a feature and specification perspective to help you make an informed decision about which you’d rather spend your hard-earned money on.

First, let’s take a closer look at the Walther PDP.

Competitor 1: Walther PDP

Do you ever simply pick up a pistol and know you’re going to shoot it well? Well, this is one of those pistols.

The PDP’s ergonomics are fantastic. Everything from the grip angle to the texture to the palmswell grooves makes it extremely easy to control, even during extended shooting sessions in adverse conditions. I’ve yet to hear someone say they didn’t like the feel of the PDP in their hand. Once it’s in your hand, it’s hard not to want to run straight to the range. Thankfully, it comes standard with 18-round magazines, so you’ll have plenty of rounds at the range.

It features a performance-duty trigger, which provides an extremely crisp and clean shooting experience. The trigger pull is average but very repeatable, so the gun is as accurate as you are once you get used to the trigger.

When you need to reload, clear a malfunction or press check, you’ll find the SuperTerrain Slide Serrations make all of those tasks very easy. Up above the serrations is an optic cut, and below them is an accessory rail, giving you plenty of options for attachments and accessories.

There are probably a dozen or two models at this point, but even the base PDP gives most shooters all they need, plus a little more. Once you get into the Pro and Match models, you enter the competition realm.

Competitor 2: Heckler & Koch VP9

As mentioned above, the HK VP9 is another that offers superior ergonomics. Think of the grip as an improved version of the Glock 19 Gen4 with the finger grooves. The VP9 also comes with interchangeable backstraps and side panels. The end result is something along the lines of 25+ combinations you can try in an attempt to achieve a near-perfect fit for your hand.

Similar to the PDP, you’ll also notice nice aggressive slide serrations, an optic cut, and a full-size accessory rail. Given the pistol’s overall size, you’re not limited to micro red dots or compact lights. A small but appreciated addition is the “wings” on the back of the slide to help with racking it.

However, while there are several similarities, the controls differ greatly and may throw you for a loop. HK utilizes an ambidextrous paddle-style mag release as opposed to a push-button. You can find some with a push-button, but the standard is the paddle style. In addition, take a look at that huge right-side slide stop lever. You wind up taking to the mag release quicker than you’d think, but that ambi slide-stop lever just seems out of place.

It’s always nice to be able to add a suppressor if you wish. Source

You won’t find as many models available as with the PDP, but if you want more bells and whistles, the Tactical model is a great step up. It features a threaded barrel and suppressor-height tritium sights.

The 17-round standard capacity isn’t too far off from the PDP either!

Score Card

Capacity: PDP

This will vary depending on the frame size you get, but the comparable models seen above leave the PDP slightly ahead by one round.

Aftermarket Support: VP9

While neither pistol will have aftermarket support similar to that of Glock, the VP9 does have slightly more than the PDP.

Ergonomics: Draw

You’ll have to hold them both and decide for yourself. However, they are both extremely comfortable in hand and shoot well.

Value: Draw

With a similar feature set and a very similar price point, overall value will also be at a draw.

And The Winner Is…

Whichever you shoot better and are more comfortable with! It’s such a close call; it’s really going to come down to personal preference.

They are both reliable and accurate and offer similar features and capacities. I find the PDP to be more comfortable to shoot, so I would go that route. However, if you were to give me a VP9, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down or complain.

I suggest you go shoot both and see which you like best. In the worst case, you get a nice range day; in the best case, you walk out with a new gun.

As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
