The idea of a zombie apocalypse gets people thinking about all of the awesome guns they would use in theory and how quickly they could take out hordes of the undead. Daydreams of unlimited ammo, automatic rifles, and pump-action shotguns are all too common.
As fun as all of that sounds, you’d also have to be realistic and think in extremes: long-term survival, limited resupply, and firearms that must be as close to 100% reliable under stress as possible.

This article walks through sensible choices for a trustworthy loadout. Everything from which types of guns to consider, how magazines and ammunition should play a leading role in your decision, and even the small extras that keep everything working when it matters most.
Reliability, Simplicity, and Availability
Reliability comes first. In a high-stress environment where it is literally life or death, you want equipment that works when you pull the trigger. There should be no sacrifice in this department.
Simplicity is almost as important. Firearms with fewer moving parts, fewer specialized tools needed, and easily understood mechanics are ideal. You should already know your firearms like the back of your hand, but in the event something arises that you haven’t dealt with, you’ll be glad you chose a simpler platform.
Last but certainly not least is availability. Choosing a common firearm chambered in a popular caliber increases the likelihood that you could scavenge parts and ammo if need be. You’re not going to want to be running a home-built rifle chambered in .25-06 Remington that uses a ton of proprietary parts.
Primary Weapon: A Versatile and Reliable Rifle (or Carbine)
Choose a rifle that balances accuracy, durability, and parts availability. In fictional apocalypse discussions, AR-15s and AK-47s often dominate conversation because they embody those priorities in different ways. But if it were a real-life scenario, they would still be your best options.
An AR-15 (in .223/5.56) excels at modularity and accuracy, plus you’ll almost always be able to find parts, ammo, and magazines. The AR’s potential downside for long-term survival is sensitivity to a lack of maintenance and cleaning. Not all AR-15s are created equal, though, so you’ll want to ensure you’re choosing one from a reputable manufacturer and that is well-built with quality parts. With the right optics, such as an LPVO or a red dot with a magnifier, you can handle any short to medium range engagements with ease.

The AK-47 is legendary for tolerance to abuse and long-term reliability under poor maintenance. It’s not as modular or naturally accurate as your AR-15s, but it’ll keep running through water, mud, and in the case of zombies, guts. And when spare parts can be scarce, that toughness is invaluable.
Depending on what you choose in the following category, a pistol caliber carbine can make sense as well. The ability to potentially share magazines and ammo between your handgun and carbine can make an excellent pair.
Secondary Weapon: A Dependable Handgun
A handgun will still be able to dispatch zombies if chambered in the right caliber, and will allow you to clear small rooms with ease. Choose a platform with a proven track record for reliability and magazines that are easy to find. I’ll save you time….go with a Glock.

Stick to 9mm and above, and you’ll be set. As a bonus, many pistol caliber carbines accept Glock-style magazines, so if you stumble upon any, you’ll be ready!
Magazines & Ammunition Strategy
Magazines are the lifeline of your loadout. The best guns are nothing more than paperweights if you don’t have reliable magazines. For a survival scenario, prioritize stocking up on factory magazines or high-quality aftermarket options.
Carry a base of high-capacity magazines for your rifle and handgun, but diversify your options. Having lower-capacity magazines will be ideal for concealment or carrying spares with ease.

Aside from the caliber itself, you’ll want to choose a reliable general-purpose load that can work for everything from defense to small game hunting. If possible, learn basic reloading skills, but remember that reloading equipment and safe storage add weight and are unlikely to be serviceable down the road. So, stock up on ammo while you can, have some well-rounded loads, and you’ll be set…for now.
Maintenance and Field Repair
A basic kit of cleaning supplies, spare parts, and simple hand tools can you keep slaying zombies for a long time. Develop routines that are easy to maintain even under stress: wipe down moving parts, check and lightly lubricate, and inspect magazines for dents or spring issues.
Prioritize items like extractors, springs, and firing pins, and select parts that are widely used. They all take up very little space, so you don’t have an excuse not to have them on hand.

AR-15 & Glock 19 Combo
This would be my loadout of choice without hesitation. A 14.5-inch AR-15 chambered in .223/5.56 paired with a Glock 19 would cover all your bases.
On the AR-15, I would run an LPVO since batteries to power red dots would be hard to come by, and it would provide medium to long-range capabilities as well. A 30-round PMAG would live in the rifle, and several spares would stay fully loaded and attached to my plate carrier.

AK-47 & Beretta 92 Combo
Believe it or not, the Beretta 92 is one of the most produced handguns in the world. It’s known for its reliability and accuracy, plus they are built like tanks. You’d be able to hopefully find magazines with relative ease, although not as easily as Glocks, of course. For that reason, I’d stack the 18-round factory magazines deep.

The AK-47 speaks for itself as it will run through your next 1,000 hordes of zombies without a hiccup. I would throw a 3x Prism Scope on it since it has an etched reticle and provides enough distance to keep those walkers at bay. Just like above, I’d keep it loaded with a 30-round PMAG at all times.
Training and Mindset
Even the best gear is only as good as the training behind it. Practice your reloads, transitioning between your primary and secondary weapons, and train for efficient shot placement to conserve ammo. When dealing with zombies, headshots not only stop the threat but also save your ammo!

Combining your trusted gear with level-headed tactics offers the best chance to survive long term, not just for a week or two.
