The popular firearms manufacturer, Smith & Wesson, has been kicking production into overdrive and releasing a ton of new guns. From concealed carry pistols to lever action rifles, there is a model for every enthusiast.
Well, unless you’re into shotguns. The M&P12 is the only shotgun offered and has not received the greatest feedback, so we’ll stick to the other platforms.
With the buzz surrounding Smith & Wesson at an all-time high, we figured it was the perfect time to showcase some of our favorite S&W offerings. And since we’re a magazine retailer, we’ll make sure to point you in the right direction of the corresponding magazines in case you need a replacement or a few spares!
Handguns
M&P9 M2.0/Shield Plus Carry Comp
Until recently, the standard M&P9 Shield Plus or M2.0 would have been in this spot, but with Smith & Wesson just releasing the new Carry Comp line, these were a no-brainer.
While maintaining the impressive capacity, flat-face trigger, and superior ergonomics of the previous models, the Carry Comp line adds more than meets the eye to improve the shooting experience.
The obvious upgrades are found in the slide, where you’ll see aggressive slide serrations, porting, and a front night sight. There is even a ClearSight Cut that helps to divert gasses away from your optic, which is always appreciated.
But one feature you can’t see is the PC-tuned action S&W added to the already impressive flat-face trigger. With all of these upgrades, it’s easily placing this entire line of the best new pistols of 2024.
With 15-round magazines now available for the Shield Plus, you can share the impressive capacity that the M2.0 Compact offers.
Bodyguard 2.0
For the .380 ACP fans, we have the Bodyguard 2.0, which has been a much-requested model for years. While the original Bodyguard was popular, it left a lot to be desired. This new 2.0 model delivers most of what the OG model was missing.
From enhanced ergonomics to a new flat-face trigger to a more aggressive slide design, S&W listened to the market. Best of all, capacity has increased to a standard 10+1 or extended 12+1 rounds.
For a pocket-sized .380 ACP, it’s hard to beat the Bodyguard 2.0.
M&P22 Compact
I think everyone should have a pistol chambered in .22 LR, and if I were to choose just one, it would be the M&P22 Compact. In fact, it’s the only .22 LR pistol I’ve kept over the years despite trying many others.
The threaded barrel and accessory rail allow you to mount most of your favorite lights or suppressors with ease. While the capacity can see some improvement, you can always stock up on magazines and pre-load them prior to heading to the range.
It can also serve as a nice training tool, as the control layout and ergonomics are similar to those of some of the other M&P pistols.
Rifles
Volunteer XV Pro
Smith & Wesson doesn’t have the largest variety of AR-15s currently in production, but it does have a nice entry-level option (M&P15 Sport III) and an intermediate offering, this Volunteer XV Pro.
I’ve had the pleasure of spending quite a bit of time on the trigger with the XV Pro, and it has run flawlessly. The flat-faced trigger, mid-length gas system, and target-crowned threaded barrel provide more than enough accuracy and reliability for the average shooter.
It also comes with upgraded B5 Systems furniture, a PWS muzzle brake, and WGS flip-up sights, leaving you with only ammo and a few spare mags needed to hit the range immediately.
M&P 15-22 Sport
Remember I said I believe everyone should have a .22 LR pistol? I feel the same way about rifles.
The M&P15-22 Sport is one of the most reliable “AR-22s” I’ve ever shot. It has been in my collection for years and has seen thousands of rounds with very few issues.
I originally bought it for training purposes since the layout is similar to that of standard AR-15s. With several 25-round magazines loaded and a basic set of Magpul MBUS flip-up sights, you have the perfect recipe for affordable and accurate fun at the range.
It even has a shell deflector, functioning charging handle and M-LOK handguard for your accessories.
Model 1854
Offered in .44 Magnum and .45 Colt, the Model 1854 made a huge splash earlier this year as S&W entered into the lever-action arena.
It’s a bit on the pricey side, but many quality lever-action rifles are. It features a forged 416 SS receiver, a 410 SS threaded barrel, and has a large loop operating lever for ease of use.
Upgrades include an XS Sights ghost ring rear sight, a Picatinny rail up top, and a flat trigger. It’s a little early to tell how well they perform long-term, but I don’t expect to hear many complaints.
Revolvers
Model 66 Combat Magnum
There’s something very satisfying about shooting a revolver that every shooter should experience at some point. The K-Frame Model 66 Combat Magnum is a fantastic revolver for new or experienced shooters thanks to its versatility and comfort.
Being chambered in .357 Magnum and able to accept .38 Special ammunition as well, you can save some money by training with .38 Special and loading .357 Magnum for defensive purposes.
It offers a six-round capacity and features a full-length extractor rod, a two-piece barrel, and a ball-detent lock-up. Additionally, its medium frame and rubberized grip make it comfortable to shoot for almost all hand sizes.
Pistol-caliber Carbines
FPC (Folding Pistol Carbine)
This horizontal folding pistol carbine is perfect as a truck gun, especially if you carry a M&P M2.0 pistol already, allowing you to share magazines between the two.
Since it folds horizontally, your optic can remain mounted and zeroed. It features a flat-face trigger, a threaded barrel, and plenty of M-LOK slots and Picatinny space for all of your favorite accessories.
It comes with one 17-round and two 23-round magazines, in addition to a carrying case, so once you add an optic, you’re ready to go.
Parting Thoughts
As you can see, S&W offers something for almost every shooter. Whether you’re a first time gun owner or a seasoned competitor, you’ll be hard-pressed not to find what you need.
If you can’t decide, keep your eyes out for range events near you where a S&W rep may have several on site to shoot. If there aren’t any events, most ranges will at least have a few models to rent.
I’m looking forward to seeing what S&W announces this year at SHOT Show. We may have to update this article sooner rather than later!
As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
