You’ve likely noticed a bullpup rifle in one of your favorite movies or video games, even if you were unaware that’s what it was called. Think of the P90 in “Call of Duty”…ring a bell? Well, that is a bullpup.

Having the action located behind the trigger is what makes a bullpup so different. There are bullpup rifles and shotguns, but today, we’ll focus on the former. They’ve grown quite popular over the last few years, and it’s easy to see why.

Bullpups

Bullpups give me Halo vibes for some reason. Source

They are generally compact and maneuverable, can be highly proficient with property training, and provide a unique aesthetic to break up your collection of standard AR-15s.

While you won’t find as many bullpup rifles to choose from as you will AR-15s, there are still plenty of great options to consider. That’s what we’ll look at today: our favorite bullpup rifles!

Pros & Cons Of Bullpup Rifles

As with any type of firearm, bullpup rifles have pros and cons that should be considered before running to the store and spending your hard-earned money.

To start on a positive note, with the action placed behind the trigger, manufacturers can shorten the rifle’s overall length without sacrificing barrel length. That means increased maneuverability without any decrease in ballistic performance.

On the other hand, having the action and a full magazine towards the rear will leave many bullpups feeling “unbalanced,” especially if you’re used to an AR-15. Reloading can also be a bit trickier and requires some additional training. However, with enough practice, it will make it more of a non-issue.

Our Top Bullpup Rifles

Now that you better understand what a bullpup is and the respective pros and cons, here are my favorites in no particular order.

IWI Tavor X95

I couldn’t help but start the list with the infamous IWI Tavor X95. It’s arguably the most well-known and proven bullpup on the market.

It’s built like a tank and looks like one, too. Source

Highly regarded for its superior reliability, the Tavor X95 also offers many modern features that you will appreciate. Ambidextrous controls, plenty of Picatinny rail space, and integrated sights make it ready to go out of the box.

Throw in the fact that you can use all of your standard AR-15 magazines and it makes the Tavor X95 a no-brainer.

Springfield Hellion

The Hellion may be the newest bullpup to hit the market on this list, but it has quickly grown in popularity thanks to its premium features and AR-style feel.

Springfield Hellion

I’d take the FDE model without hesitation! Source

With an adjustable stock, Bravo Company Mod 3 grip, and integrated flip-up sights, it will feel extremely familiar if you come from an AR-15. The uninterrupted Picatinny rail up top and M-LOK slots all over the handguard provide ample accessory compatibility and space.

It’s fully ambidextrous, features an adjustable gas system, and even has a reversible case ejection system. And just like the Tavor, all your standard AR-15 magazines are compatible!

FN PS90

Switching things up a bit, we have the FN PS90, which is significantly different from the rest of the bullpups on the list.

FN PS90

Did anyone else’s “Call of Duty” loadout include the PS90? Source

The PS90 is chambered in 5.7x28mm and boasts a standard 50-round capacity, with the magazine placed on top of the rifle and in a horizontal position. Strange, right?

Its unique layout and configuration make it a much harder bullpup to get used to, but it’s a blast to shoot…pun intended.

There isn’t as much room for attachments, and the magazines can be a bit pricey, but the unique shooting experience makes it stand out from the crowd.

Steyr AUG

Another proven and reliable bullpup is the Steyr AUG, without which no bullpup list is complete. Adopted by the Austrian army almost 50 years ago, it’s since made its way into many military units and shooting enthusiasts’ hands.

Its cold hammer-forged chrome-lined barrel and gas regulator provide superior reliability and accuracy. Thanks to the generous-sized Picatinny rail, you’ll also be able to mount your favorite optic with no problem, but it’s important to note that most models will only accept AUG magazines. Select NATO models will accept standard AR-15 magazines, but most do not.

The trigger won’t win any awards, and you’ll have limited options when it comes to customization, but it has proven itself time and time again that it deserves to be ranked among the best bullpups.

KelTec RDB

Budget and bullpup do not typically go hand in hand, but the Kel-Tec RDB is a clear exception, often found under $750 brand new.

Despite the low price tag, the RDB offers features such as an adjustable gas system, a surprisingly nice trigger (for a bullpup), and plenty of Picatinny space. And thanks to its downward ejection design, it’s genuinely ambidextrous.

With a low upfront cost and the ability to run your standard AR-15 magazines, the RDB is an excellent option for your entry into bullpups.

Are Bullpups For You?

It’s understandable if you’ve made it this far and are still wondering if a bullpup is for you. Heck, I’m right there with you if you are.

They provide a fun and unique shooting experience but oftentimes come with a high price tag and steep learning curve. If you do decide you’re going to dip your toes in the bullpup pond, the five options above are a great place to start your search.

No matter which you pick, whether from this list or not, be sure to set time aside to train. The ergonomics and layouts are much different than your standard AR-15s, so range time is crucial.

As always, stay safe, train hard, and have fun.
