The Ruger Mini-14 is one of the finest modern-day sporting rifles. Ruger ensured we got everything we needed, and then it sprinkled on more flavor with an array of variants, with each model being just as fun to shoot as the next.
We’ve run many different magazines through the Mini-14 (the Tactical model in 5.56×45 and Mini Thirty in 7.62×39) to find out which could keep up and which would be better off as scrap material.
No matter which caliber your Mini-14 is chambered in, we have all the magazines you could want, and this list will help you choose which are best for your individual needs.

Reliable From The Factory
One of the most reliable magazines you can buy is the one that comes with your firearm from the factory. Your firearm has been tested time and time again with said magazine and is designed to work best with it.
The OG Ruger Mini-14 magazine is made of blued steel, which is durable enough to stay intact through hard training and lightweight enough to not weigh you down at the range.
It’s perfect for replacing your factory magazine or stocking your plate carrier.
If you’re one of those shooters who doesn’t like having only 20 rounds when everyone else has 30, then it’s only right for you to upgrade.
Like the 20-round factory magazine, this 30-rounder is made of blued steel with a polymer follower. It doesn’t offer many features; it is meant to complete the job. It’s a quality, no-frills, task-oriented magazine.
No gimmicks.
Restricted States:
Living in a state that restricts your magazine capacity can be frustrating and can make you feel outgunned. The solution? Learn how to reload quickly and buy a lot of 10-round magazines.
These magazines come straight from Ruger and are meant for use with your Mini-14, so you don’t have to stress about compatibility or fitment issues. It’s as simple as plug-and-play.
As with the other Ruger magazines, the 10-rounder is made of blued steel with a polymer follower for maximum durability and reliability.
.300 Blackout:
It doesn’t get much better than a Ruguer Mini-14 with a suppressor. Odds are, if you’re planning a suppressed Mini-14 build, you’ll want .300 Blackout.
This 20-round magazine is similar in dimensions to the 5.56×45 magazine, so it isn’t as bulky as other .30 caliber magazines. And, of course, it’s made of steel, so you don’t have to worry about throwing it around.

6.8 SPC:
It’s one of the best ranch rifle rounds of all time.
6.8 SPC can take down or, at the very least, mortally wound whatever predator wanders onto your land, but the magazine capacities are typically low.
Five rounds of 6.8 SPC may not sound like much, but unless you run into six bears, you won’t have to worry. It gets the job done.
Aftermarket Extended Capacity
Who said your capacity had to be limited? Just because it’s not an AR-15 doesn’t mean you can’t have AR-15 capacity. Heads up, the Mini-14 does excellent with the 5.56×45 cartridge.
This magazine isn’t only meant for the range; its steel construction also makes it great for the outdoors. Just make sure you dry it off, though.
Icing on the cake? It’s made in the USA and backed by a lifetime guarantee against manufacturer’s defects.
You’ve heard the saying, “Less is more,” correct? Well, that’s not the case here. In this case, more is better, and more is called for. I love using high-capacity magazines when breaking in new firearms or tuning my rifle.
Less loading, more shooting. Well, it balances out, but you get my point. This 40-round magazine features both polymer and heat-treated steel, hence the hybrid name. The combination of materials provides a great balance of durability and reliability.
Whether having fun on the range or dispatching uninvited guests, you’ll have more than enough ammunition.
Lightweight and Hunting

Hunting can sometimes mean trekking over long distances. When the weight starts to add up, it can take the will to hunt out of you. One way to make everything lighter is to lower the weight of your firearm.
The easiest way to do that is by lowering the magazine’s weight.
While 5.56×45 wouldn’t be my first choice for hunting, it doesn’t get much lighter than five rounds of the small cartridge.
6.8 SPC:
Now, 6.8 SPC is a different story. You can have five rounds of it and fare well against multiple game types.
This steel mag isn’t the smallest in the world, but it does help keep the weight down when in the field.
Accessories
Magazine loader:
Stripper clips are one of the most genius inventions of all time. When used with a strip loader, they can shave a ton of time off reloading, which lets you focus on what’s important…shooting.
They also save your thumbs. I know you long-time shooters have joint pain in your thumb(s), and this is here to help.
I’d even venture to say loaders should be considered as PPE. Save the fingers!
Magazine pouch:
Having an extra magazine on you is a great way to ensure you’re never out when needed. The rifle taco keeps one on you at all times, so if you have to reload, you don’t have to dig for a fresh magazine and loose rounds.
These can be worn on a battle belt or vest, so there’s no need to worry about compatibility. Just attach them and go.
Conclusion
No matter what magazine you need, we have it.
Remember, these are just recommendations; they don’t have to be used in any specific role. Don’t hesitate to use a 40-round magazine for hunting or a 5-round magazine at the range. It all comes down to personal preference!
Be good and take care.
